Merano started to develope as a spa resort from the mid-nineteenth century onwards thanks to its exceptionally favourable climate and sheltered position.
Luck gave Merano a helping hand when, by happy coincidence, the Austrian Empress Sissi and their court twice came to stay here (Trauttmansdorff Castle) in the winters of 1870 and 1872.
